Fiber Optics

The increasing need for connectivity everywhere and higher bandwidth requirements have made increasing use of fiber optic cable in most applications.

Fiber optic communications has several advantages over the conventional copper based communications, some of them are:

• Fiber optic cable have a much greater bandwidth than the copper cables. They can carry more data.
• Optical fiber is immune to electromagnetic interference unlike copper conductors
• Fiber optic cable are much thinner and lighter than copper cables
• Fiber optic systems support much longer distances than copper

Fiber Optic system uses light to transmit signals through small strands of optical (or plastic) fiber. A fiber optic system will include optical transmitter, fiber optic cable and optical receiver. The optical transmitter and receiver are combined into a single unit as transceiver.
